What is web hosting?

Web hosting is a space on a server for publishing a web site so that it is available to the world on the Web. Paid web hosting also involves getting a domain name and not having forced ads displayed on your site.

What is shared (virtual) web hosting?

Shared (or virtual) web hosting is the best way and easiest of hosting for 99% of web sites. This means that a web hosting company will have one or more servers (computers constantly connected to the Internet that run a web server software such as Apache or IIS) that will be running multiple web sites (it will be shared). Unless a web site is exceptionally busy or requires a lot of bandwidth, this is the least expensive way to get a real web site. You can still have your own IP address with virtual hosting and the site won't look any different to users.

How long will it take to set up my account?

Files must be transferred to the Web server via File Transport Protocol (FTP) or your account's Web-based File Manager. We also provide a Web-based File Manager to make it even easier for you to upload your files from within your cPanel.

When you sign up, you will get an FTP account that lets you access files in your account (usually ftp.yoursitename.com, your main account name and password). Then you can use a built-in Windows or Internet Explorer FTP client, or some other software that supports FTP such as CuteFTP, WS_FTP, or Total Commander, to transfer files from your hard drive to your account.

We recommend using dedicated FTP programs as the preferred ftp solution because these programs have the best user interfaces and support advanced options like setting file permissions and resuming aborted file transfers.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a sequence of letters and numbers which determine the address of your site. You need to register a domain name before your web site becomes accessible at this address.

When I register a domain name, who will have ownership of it?

When you register and pay for a domain name with us, you will have full ownership of your domain name. This means that you can move your domain name somewhere else or modify it however you want. You have full control over your domain name.

How long does it take before my domain name is active?

Once your domain name has been registered (or transferred, if applicable), it usually takes about 12-24 hours to be active. All Internet providers must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect the new site's location.

Can I transfer a domain name registered someplace else to your domain registration service?

Yes, it is possible to transfer your domain registration to us. To do so you need to fill out the order form select "Transfer your Existing Domain", and enter the EPP authorization code. Once you do that we can proceed to transfer your domain name. Pricing for domain transfers and renewals varies by domain type (TLD) and may be seen on our order form.

My Domain is not transffering, why?

In order to transfer your registration to us you must submit your request to us at least 30 days before your domain name expires at its current registrar. If it's past that date you'll have to renew with the current registrar.

Some registrar will not release a name that has been newly registered for less than 30 days.

Your domain name must be "unlocked" with the current registrar, and you will frequently need a domain transfer code or "EPP code".

Will there be any downtime in transferring my domain name registration to WestHost?

There is no downtime associated with transferring your domain name. Once the domain is transferred you may wish to change the DNS on your domain to point to our name servers.

If you do change your DNS servers, this can introduce downtime of up to 24 hours.

How long does it take for the DNS to update?

From the time you change the DNS it can take approximately 24- 48 hours for the change to propagate throughout the Internet and become active. During this time your website may be down until the change has fully propagated through the Internet.

Can I use Java applets, JavaScript, and Flash pages on my site?

Any browser (such as Internet Explorer or Netscape) that supports them is enough, so any host will do. It doesn't matter whether Java or Flash are listed among the plan's features, they are supported by default.
